Bill Buckingham Massachusetts, USA www.stillwatermosaics.comIt took a while for rock to find me. Stained glass found its way into my mosaics as well as vitreous and smalti. But rock just couldn't break through until I was ready. My good friends and mentors, Lynn Moor & Sophie Drouin, provided plenty of encouragement and inspiration. But my resistance was too great, that is ... until I started hammering and nipping away at some marble. Then it hit me like ... well, like a rock - and I haven't stopped using it since.
I like the texture of rock. It's solid and real. But it's also subtle and elusive. I like the earth tones and ragged textures.
Most of all, I like how a single piece of rock or marble doesn't look like much, but when placed in a mosaic, its true personality comes out as as solo star or as a supporting cast member. |
