Dana Lenoir Florida, USADana is an eleventh grade fifth year Latin student. Each year there is a Latin Forum where all the students in the surrounding counties compete in different areas of the arts and test their knowledge of Latin. This year Dana tried her hand at making a replica of one of the famous "Cave Canem" (Beware of Dog) Mosaics found at the entrance of an excavated Pompeii home. She won first place! The experience due to the intense attention to detail and long hours spent studying and then making the mosaic brought a strange bond between the unknown artist who lived 2000 years ago and the student. Forced to either decide to retrace or rework the original artist's choices, Dana was being instructed and challenged stone by stone as if the original creator was right by her side. The elegant line of the leash balanced by the elegant line of the tail draws the eye to the not so fearful, but delineated pup. The form and movement of the dog's body is accented through the placement of the tile. |
