Rachel Sager Pennsylvania, USAIncorporating natural material into my art has been a process, but also a constant. I grew up around stone - architectually and in nature. My parents restored a 200 year old stone farmhouse throughout my childhood, and their love and respect for the old material, whether it be wood or stone, they passed on to me. In a way, I have been working with stone continually since I built my first dam in a creek. Over time, I have streamlined this love of natural material and now it has become an intregal part of my mosaic work. I find the simple strength of stone to be a powerful foil to mosaic glass. The vibrant colors of smalti create a perfect dichotomy against the rough texture and singular fortitude of stone. As I grow as an artist, I find that material inspires; and learning how to work with a new type of stone is certainly a big part of the attraction. |
