Sonia King Texas, USA www.mosaicworks.comI’ve always been a rockhound. As a ten year old, the owners of a local rockshop gave me my first job because I hung around so much. I was paid in rocks. And my mom was creating mosaic art at the same time. I think all that distilled years later into my artwork and my chosen medium.
My work is strongly related to a sense of place and a connection to the land, seeing terrain in terms of its geology and topography. I remain fascinated with an altered view of the earth on which we live, landscapes both familiar and unreal. I work in natural materials (marble, glass, smalti, minerals, golds, found objects, etc.) exploring the texture and the spaces in between the tesserae. Perhaps these give a clue to what lies below the surface. As my work becomes more map-like, I seem to be finding my way without knowing where I am going. At the moment, the illusion and the contradiction fascinate me. Is this a slide under a microscope or a view from outer space? I want viewers to look at the world around them with different eyes after seeing my work. |
